Remains
of the ancient agora, Smyrna, modern Izmir, Turkey. |

The
Trajanum, Pergamum. Among the seven churches for
which John had a letter was Pergamum, "where
Satan has his throne".

In
the Agora, or great marketplace, of ancient Athens,
Paul debated daily with Epicurean and Stoic philosophers,
probably in a colonnade such as the Stoa of Attalus.
The Court of the Areopagus, where Paul defended
his views on Jesus and the resurrection, probably
met in the Royal Colonnade.

The
monumental gateway, or Propylaea, leading to the
Parthenon, Athens.

 |
The
impressive fluted columns of the Propylaea, the
Acropolis, Athens.
|
| This
headon view of the Parthenon emphasizes its finely
dimensioned structure. |
 |
 |
The
restored Stoa of Attalus, seen from the Acropolis.
Recent research suggests that it may have been here
that Paul addresses the Court (or meeting) of the
Areopagus. |

| Library
of Celsus. Built in AD 114-117 by Consul Gatus Julius
Aquila for his father, the library was damaged first by
the Goths and then by an earthquake in 1000. The ststues
occupying the niches in front are Sophia (wisdom), Arete
(virtue), Ennoia (intellect) and Episteme (knowledge). |

The
Blue Mosque was built by some of the same stonemasons who helped
to build the Taj Mahal. |
